Jay Heikes (Minneapolis, Minn.): “While growing up in New Jersey I found it impossible to believe that that was the way the world really was. With its shopping malls, massive amounts of pop culture and troubling friends, I chose to seek out other places while still being haunted by the nostalgia of a state so eschew. In moving from Michigan to Georgia to Minneapolis to Connecticut to New York then back to Minneapolis again, I’ve currently found a strange home here in the Twin Cities. In 2000, I codirected The Waiting Room and fell in love with a malnourished art scene that has morphed into what it is now. The Walker Art Center, Midway Contemporary Art and The Soap Factory combined with a plethora of local musicians and artists have influenced and inspired me, helping me to achieve successes in showing my work at venues like the Renaissance Society in Chicago, Whitney Museum of American Art, PS1 and the ICA in Philadelphia.”
