Foung Heu (St. Paul, Minn.), an immigrant from war-torn Laos, is a filmmaker and multimedia producer. He captures the struggle and heartache, triumph and progress in the Hmong-American community in Minnesota, including the successful campaign of the first Hmong elected to state office. Using media technology to empower people and build bridges across culture and communities, Heu has worked on several national titles, such as Hmong at Heart and Mississippi: River of Song. He holds a BA in computer science and media arts from the University of Kansas and an MS in interactive multimedia development and computer animation from Rochester Institute of Technology (New York). He is the producer of the first Hmong weekly television program at Twin Cities Public Television. His involvement in the community includes serving on the board of St. Paul District 2 Council and cofounding the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent. He is a 1998 Bush Leadership Fellow.
