Greg Herriges (Minneapolis, MN) is a Western musician whose work integrates Eastern styles and sensibilities. He composes, arranges and performs string-oriented music that falls roughly into a “world fusion” category with experimental flavors. His main composing tools are the guitar, Greek bouzouki (lute) and piano, but his ensemble arrangements include Indian and African percussion, toys, a Hindustani vocalist and Chinese pipa (lute). Herriges fed his worldly interests by studying ethnomusicology at the University of Minnesota, specializing in music of South and East Asia with a focus on Javanese gamelan and Hindustani classical music. He went on to write instructional music books for Hal Leonard Publishing, specializing in world music for guitar. In addition to leading his own ensemble, Telluric Currents, he composes and directs music for various theater companies and serves as graphic designer on the Indian Music Society of Minnesota board of directors.
