Leadership Program Overview

The Bush Leadership Fellows Program seeks accomplished, motivated individuals who are eager to prepare themselves for greater leadership opportunities and to create positive change in their communities.

We invite applicants to propose academic or self-designed learning experiences that will help them attain goals that they set for themselves. We encourage applications that will expand fellows’ experiences beyond the familiar to learning environments that might be inaccessible without a fellowship. To learn more about planning for a fellowship, please review Planning for a Fellowship. We also encourage potential applicants to review Creating Broader Impact: How Individuals Contribute to the Strength of Communities, Institutions and Fields report and the Summary of Key Findings.

Approximately 20 Leadership fellows per year have been selected since 1975. Fellows include women and men in such fields as public service, education, government, health, business, engineering, architecture, science, farming, forestry, law, trade unions, law enforcement, journalism and social work.

Fellowships range in length from two months to 18 months, and are required to be completed within 36 months of the mandatory start date.

The deadline for applications is October of each year and Leadership fellowships are granted in late March the following year. We announce the new Leadership fellows in April. The specific deadline changes from year to year, so please review Important Dates to review the public information meetings schedule and the application deadline for the current selection cycle.
