How long do fellowships last?
A fellowship may last anywhere from two to eighteen months. The applicant proposes the amount of time necessary to carry out his or her fellowship plan. {Go to Top}
Are there eligibility requirements that a person has to meet in order to apply?
Yes. In order to have an application considered by the selection committee an applicant must meet eligibility requirements that are outlined in the Bush Leadership Fellows application materials. {Go to Top}
Do I have to be a certain age to apply for a fellowship?
Yes. Applicants must be at least 28 years old to have an application considered. While the program has a minimum age requirement, it does not have an upper age limit. {Go to Top}
Do I have to quit my job if I am granted a fellowship?
No. Fellows are required to engage in full-time study while on fellowship, so they may not be employed at that time. Fellows are required to obtain a leave of absence prior to starting the fellowship, but they are not required to quit their jobs. {Go to Top}
Am I required to use a fellowship in a degree-granting program?
No. While fellowships may be used to pursue degrees such as master or doctoral degrees, they may also be used to pursue self-designed learning experiences approved by the fellowship selection committees. Self-designed learning experiences may include internships, site visits, interviews and course work. Fellows may also pursue learning experiences that include a combination of a degree-granting and self-designed program. {Go to Top}
Do I have to leave my home community in order to pursue a fellowship?
No. Fellows are not required to leave their home communities to pursue the fellowship. However, many fellows find they must leave their home community for all or part of the fellowship to pursue learning experiences that they could not obtain without the fellowship. {Go to Top}
What kind of financial support does the fellowship provide?
Fellows receive a $4,000/monthly stipend to cover living expenses and, depending upon the program they propose, up to $24,000 in travel reimbursement and instructional expense payments. {Go to Top}
Does the fellowship cover the full cost of the learning experience?
No. Usually Fellows invest some of their own money in the learning experience or find other financial resources for expenses that the fellowship does not cover. {Go to Top}
Can a person apply more than once if he/she is not selected for a fellowship?
Yes. There are no limits for how many times a person may apply for a fellowship if he/she is not granted a fellowship. However, the person must continue to meet the program’s eligibility requirements. {Go to Top}
Is it possible to be granted more than one Bush Leadership Fellowship in a lifetime?
No. An individual may only be granted one Bush Leadership Fellowship in a lifetime. However, those selected for Leadership Fellowships are also eligible to apply for Bush Artist and Medical Fellowships if they meet the criteria of those programs. {Go to Top}
