Financial Support

A Leadership fellowship provides financial support so that fellows can step away from their paid employment and pursue the fellowship on a full time basis. The financial support includes:

  • a monthly stipend to cover living expenses;
  • reimbursement for travel expenses that are incurred to carry out the fellowship plan up to a specified maximum amount and;
  • learning expenses, which include:

    • tuition
    • fees for workshop or seminars
    • honorariums paid to advisors, mentors or professional experts who assist you during your fellowship
    • fees for editors, tutors and transcriptionists
The cost for traveling to and from a location as part of the fellowship is reimbursable under travel expenses. Additionally, if applicants are in one location (e.g. Boston) for two weeks or less as part of the fellowship, they also may be reimbursed for:
  • meals
  • lodging
  • transportation (e.g. taxis, subways, rental cars, tolls)

Learning expenses are shared with fellows. The fellowship pays 50 percent of individual learning expenses when the overall total for learning expenses equals $8,000 or less. Once a fellow’s total charges for learning expenses exceed $8,000, the fellowship increases the percentage it pays for individual learning expenses to 80 percent up to a specified maximum amount.

Learning expenses do not cover:

  • books, digital voice recorders, cell phones or any other item that could be used beyond the fellowship
  • the printing and binding of thesis or dissertations
  • health insurance
  • the various fees universities charge enrolled students

The amounts paid for monthly stipends, travel reimbursement and learning expenses are periodically adjusted. Please see the financial support available for the current grant cycle, which is listed below.

Paid internships and sabbaticals

Applicants including paid internships as part of their fellowships, or applicants pursuing a fellowship during a sabbatical should be aware that compensation received from an internship or sabbatical combined with the monthly stipend cannot exceed an applicant’s compensation immediately prior to the fellowship.

Financial Support for 2009 Leadership Fellowships

The following amounts will be granted:

Travel Reimbursement: $6,000

Learning Expenses: $18,000

We do not guarantee that every fellow will receive the maximum in travel reimbursement and learning expenses.
