Selection Process

Two selection committees choose Bush Leadership Fellows. The preliminary selection committee chooses finalists after a review of all application forms, references and interview reports. This committee may ask applicants to participate in a preliminary interview with a representative of the program. The preliminary committee invites finalists to participate, at Foundation expense, in a three-day residential seminar. At the seminar, a separate final selection committee interviews finalists and chooses Bush Leadership Fellows. Please review Important Dates to review the timeline for the current selection cycle. Selection Committees lists the previous year’s preliminary and final selection committees.

Foundation Records

Applicants voluntarily furnish the information requested in the application. However, an applicant who fails to provide vital information may be eliminated from fellowship competition. The Foundation does not return applications and supporting documents nor will it furnish copies of these materials. Applicants should maintain copies of their application materials and in no case submit irreplaceable documents.

Applications for fellowships and materials generated in the review process are used by persons involved with the selection of fellows and the staff of the Bush Leadership Fellows Program. The information also may be used in aggregate form for statistical analysis and program evaluations, but individual anonymity will be protected.

In addition, files of approved fellowship plans are archived by the Minnesota Historical Society, although they are not available to the public for 50 years.

Fellows’ application materials also may be used by Foundation staff for background information in preparation of articles or other promotional materials. However, the Foundation will not publish personal information without the permission of the fellow.
