Bush Foundation Announces Nine Medical Fellows for 2008

Sample Goals

Each applicant will develop a personal goal for the fellowship. The goals listed below are provided as examples of goal statements developed by previous recipients. They are intended to demonstrate the scope and variety of possible fellowships and are not meant to promote any specific program of study.

• To develop a chronic lung disease education program focused on elderly and underserved populations and to better understand the role sleep disorders play in the management of these diseases; to develop skills in outcome evaluation and disease management implementation
• To improve delivery of health care to the changing population in South Minneapolis, particularly in the areas of domestic violence and chemical dependency
• To help develop a more effective model for health care by learning skills that would help integrate the therapies of mind-body medicine into clinical practice; also to begin to explore the spiritual side of suffering in order to provide more holistic care to patients
• To develop skills in medical group management in order to lead the local rural health care delivery system and to develop an integrated, collaborative relationship between the rural hospitals in the area
• To develop skills in academic medicine and use them to advance the care of underserved patients through teaching and research; to become fluent in medical Spanish; to improve knowledge of complementary and nutritional therapies
• To study addiction medicine intensively with special clinical emphasis on cutting-edge pharmacotherapy along with special medical needs patients
• To improve clinical skills in dermatology and menopausal women’s health issues and gain expertise in teaching skills
• To develop and upgrade knowledge and skills in the practice of emergency medicine and to enhance leadership skills in order to work collaboratively with other health care providers and organizations to improve the delivery of emergency medicine in rural Minnesota
